Visual Squash – Integration Technique
Purpose: Use to manage conflict, identifying positive intentions, blending, and integrating. It can be used with conflict or ambivalence. For instance even the most together people, have parts that are in conflict with each other, and this technique allows them to integrate the two.
Examples:
- Firmness/Leniency
- Controlling/Passive
- Wants to eat/wants to be slender
- Wants to succeed/wants to be loved
- Wants to be taken care of/wants to be independent
- Wants to be spontaneous/wants to live by planning & routine.
1) Identify: Unconscious behavior or wanted behavior – how it is useful
2) Visualize: Visualize the part that wants you to do the unwanted thing.
3) Understand: Acknowledge what worthwhile thing the unconscious part is trying to fulfill. Positive function.
4) Integrate: Make real how the two seemingly separate intentions when blended can benefit and enhance each other. Separate parts are established, their intentions defined, and then slowly brought together then merged with the heart, with the added suggestion “Now keep your hands together and slowly bring this new part containing all that was of value in both toward your chest.” This blended part can now fully join with you, becoming a part of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, now and into the future.
